Dear Mariners

Dear Seattle Mariners,

Please give me a reason to show up to games at Safeco Field this summer.

I am a lifelong baseball fan, especially when it comes to the Mariners, but as of right now I cannot justify spending a single dollar of my money going to a Mariners game next season.

The only draws I can think of are garlic fries, finally being able to drink at the stadium, seeing other teams' stars play, people watching and seeing King Felix pitch the occasional game.

That is five reasons, only one of which has to do with your team — your product. As a professional baseball team, your product is your team, and as-is, the product is disgusting.

I am still going to watch games on television but I need a reason to make the Pullman to Seattle trip this summer to see games in person. I want to give you my money, I really do, so give me a reason.

If you would like to know what you can do to get me, and your other fans back into the seats at Safeco Field, sign Prince Fielder.

The owners have not been asked to invest money in the team since the beginning and that is just ridiculous. You can run a team strictly off pure income up to a certain point, and that point has come and gone.

The problem with this business model is once you have one or two bad seasons, as an organization you are completely screwed. Two bad seasons leads to less attendance, less attendance leads to less income, and less income leads to a smaller operating budget and payroll.

It is a death spiral. A decreased payroll limits your ability to sign quality players on the open market and then you’re headed for a third bad season. Let the process repeat itself for season after season, and you get to where we are right now.

The only way to break this spiral is to spend, even if just for the sake of spending. Ask the owners for money, makes cuts, do whatever it takes to get Prince Fielder in a Mariners uniform.

I understand completely that Fielder is not the entire answer to the Mariners on-field performance; he will not fix this team by himself. But what Fielder will do is get fans back to the stadium.

If you bring fans back to Safeco Field, you will break the spiral, at least temporarily.

I am sure you understand all this already, you are smart people after all. I am simply here to let you know the fans understand this as well, and you are making the fans pretty angry.

You are not going to get away with doing nothing for a whole lot longer.

Just show me some signs of trying, really trying, and I’ll be at Safeco Field in a heartbeat.

Sincerely,

A Diehard Mariners Fan

P.S. If you could do something about Chone Figgins too, that would be fantastic. He is creating a mess all over the place.
