When my nose is not glued to the pages of the newest Vogue, I find myself nerding out quite often. What is that, you ask? Is it possible for a geeky fashionista to exist?
Recently, my fashion senses were inspired by the blockbuster movies based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien. The “Lord of the Rings” books and movies captivate me to no end. However, until recently, I had never noticed the excellent artistic direction of the films that created three distinct looks for the races of Hobbits, elves and men.
Hobbits are an innocent, playful and down-to-earth people. Pieces hued in vivid earth tones of green and brown will excellently mimic the rolling hills of the Shire
To create this look, start with a corduroy vest or a blazer with rounded lapels. Nothing stays clean in Hobbiton for long, so pairing these with soft cream colors instead of stark whites will add warmth.
Instead of walking around campus in true hobbit fashion with a persistent layer of dirt on your bare feet, try leather shoes like brown oxfords and flats. Accessorize with Celtic inspired metal or wooden jewelry and leaf inspired broaches. Also, accessories with scarves, knee high socks and woven leather belts to complete the look.
For the brave at heart, there is the style of the world of man.
Colors inspired by the race of man evoke visions of royalty. These include maroon, navy, purple, black and gold.
Leather boots not only give you protection in battle but also provide sleek style. Styles such as equestrian, lace up and details like chunky buckles and chains tell the fashion world (and your enemies) that you mean business.
Armor inspired pounded metal cuffs paired with simple chain necklaces are brave masculine accessories and are perfect for this look.
If Hobbits creep you out and the world of men is just too gosh darn corruptible, elvish-inspired fashion might be right up your alley. The elvish style is great for those who emit an effortless, light ethereal glow.
Clothes inspired by the elves of Rivendell flow with windswept movement. It is best to keep it simple, wearing feminine and natural pieces with pastel colors accented with white and ivory. Silver jewelry featuring floral accents or an arrow motif (think Orlando Bloom) add to this ethereal look.
The elves also feature a hair trend: braids. Whether you hair is wavy or stick straight, this look is all about being natural and in tune with your own body.
Staying true to the natural beauty of LOTR’s featured female heroines, makeup should be simple. Mascara, rosy cheeks and a tinted lip can be paired with any of the three looks.
The style of these characters creates all the adventure of the three-part epic, without the orcs. When Lord Elrond said, “May the blessings of elves and men and free folk go with you,” he was obviously wishing you well on your quest for fashion.
