Picking the right replacement for Dupus Boomer's wasn’t about finding the perfect food, said Sean Greene, executive director of the CUB. Instead, the university wanted to create an inviting place for students to relax in a larger seating area.

“Lack of seating has been one of our primary complaints from students when we do our student survey every spring,” Greene said. “The bulk of the space now is open seating.”

The space is also the new home for Reunion Café and Espresso, which officially opened Monday and has seen a steady stream of business since, said manager Tim Finnerty.

Finnerty also runs Gridiron Burgers and Fries, the new burger joint next to the café and deli. Managing three venues at once is no sweat for him, though. He oversaw 22 businesses at one point in his career.

Gridiron is all about fast service, Finnerty said.

“You can come have a hamburger and it can be made for you in 30 seconds,” he said.

The café serves Starbucks coffee and Hopes cookies, which Finnerty said are the best cookies you will ever find. The deli features a variety of sandwiches and soups.

The café opens at 7 a.m., the deli at 10 a.m. and Gridiron opens at 10:30 a.m.

They all close at 5 p.m. but students are welcome to hang out in the seating area after hours, Greene said.

Finnerty plans on keeping the restaurants open during football games and possibly other events throughout the year.

Correction: A previous version of this story contained a misspelling of Gridiron Burgers and Fries. It was corrected on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 1:20 p.m.
