WSU women's tennis captured six of eight championships on the final day of play at the 2011 Kansas Invitational.
On the first day of competition, the women's tennis team advanced all eight singles players to the semifinals of the 2011 Kansas Invitational. The Cougars went 8-0 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles.
Senior Elisabeth Fournier won her singles match against Alexandra Johannson of Nova Southeastern 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round of singles A draw. Junior Liudmila Vasilieva defeated Tamara Slijepcevic of Arkansas State 6-1, 6-0 in the B draw while junior Andjela Kankaras defeated Austin LaVallii of Nova Southeastern, 6-3, 6-1 for a C draw victory.
Other singles winners from the first day include junior Ksenia Googe, who defeated Maddie Schulte 6-1, 6-2 in the D flight, and sophomore Olga Musilovich, who defeated Maria Toro of Saint Louis 6-0, 6-0 in the E draw.
All three Cougar freshmen had strong showings Friday. Elizaveta Luzina defeated Jillian Yakominich of UMKC 6-1, 6-1 in the F draw, Charlotte Koning defeated Gabriela Pintos of UMKC 6-2, 6-0 in the G division and Anastasia Romantsova defeated Marina Kiefer of South Dakota 6-2, 6-4 in Draw H.
At the conclusion of the second day, the Cougars saw seven players head to the final day of play.
Fournier advanced to the A draw finals with a win against Mariana Rong of Arkansas State 6-2, 6-4. Vasilieva defeated Steff Hollis of Saint Louis 6-3, 6-0 in the B draw and played in Sunday's final. Kankaras defeated Stephanie Fox of Kentucky in three sets 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 and will play Carla Manzi of Colorado in the final.
In other singles action, Googe dropped her semifinal match to Biljana Milosevska of Arkansas State 6-2, 6-0. Musilovich beat Suzan Lisenby of UMKC 6-4, 7-5 in the E draw semifinal.
Luzina advanced to the Sunday morning final by beating Nina Barudciz of South Dakota 6-3, 6-1 in F draw. Koning defeated Federica Longo of Nova Southeastern in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 to advance to the G draw final. Romantsova defeated Madeline Jolly of Saint Louis 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 and will play in Sunday's H draw final.
In doubles action, Fournier/Romantsova captured the B draw doubles title after two wins on Saturday. The duo defeated Urzendowski/Jolly of Saint Louis 8-3 and Hollis/Elmore, also of Saint Louis, 8-2 in the final. Pezzotti/Los of Kansas defeated Koning/Kankaras 8-3 in the A draw semifinals while Googe/Musilovich also dropped their semifinal match to Blajkevitch/Witten of Kentucky 8-6.
When all was said and done on the final day of competition, the Cougars captured six titles.
Fournier won the A draw singles title by defeating Krissi Schleich 6-1, 6-3 and Vasilieva defeated Winde Janssens 7-6, 6-1 in the B draw final. Kankaras beat Carla Manzi 7-5, 6-1 in the C draw title match. Googe defeated Erin Sanders 6-3, 6-0 to place third in singles draw D. All four of the Cougars' opponents compete for Colorado University.
Musilovich made it to the championship match of draw E, but fell to Claire Dreyer of Kansas 6-3, 6-0. Luzina beat Kansas'Vika Khanevskaya in three sets to take the title in draw F 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 10-5.
Koning and Romantsova won the G and F singles draws, respectively. Koning defeated Ceara Howey of Arkansas State 6-2, 7-5 and Romantsova beat Jessica Ball of UMKC 6-2, 6-3.
Next week Washington State will host the Cougar Classic, Sept. 23 through 25.
