Carly Engstrom/The Daily EvergreenStudents and moms ran to raise funds for breast cancer research Sunday near Airport Road. Pink was the color of choice at the Moms on the Run Mom’s Weekend 5K on Saturday.
The race, hosted by the Sport Management Club, benefits Every Woman Can — an organization that provides free mammograms to women. Inland Imaging in Spokane founded the organization and conducts breast cancer research, said Sport Management Club President Sunni Bleibtrey.
Bleibtrey said the event was a success. The event more than doubled from last year’s participants with more than 200 this year and surpassed their goal of $1,500 in proceeds.
Last year, the 5K was put on through a class, with Bleibtrey and four others hosting the event.
“I’m glad we did it,” said Mikayla Brandhorst, the Sport Management Club secretary. “It’s been a great experience here. It has let us be involved in the community, which is something the Sport Management Club hadn’t done before.”
Bleibrey said they aligned the event with Mom’s Weekend to make the connection of moms affected by breast cancer.
“We wanted to get as many people as we could for a great cause,” she said.
