Cable 8 is known around campus as a student-run television network. Students may have watched some of the shows offered or acted in them, but many do not realize Cable 8 is more than just television.

“Cable 8 puts on awesome television shows, but it does so much more than that,” awards and publications manager and sophomore communication major Sarah Wilcock said.

On top of producing award-winning shows, the program participates in events throughout Washington and the country, including their annual telethon to raise money for children in need.

Another element of Cable 8 is the opportunity for free publicity to student organizations on campus. Students working at Cable 8 put together free commercials and promos for any RSO on campus.

“Cable 8 branches out much further than just the broadcast world,” Wilcock said. “There are so many different sources of opportunity within the organization.”

Students at Cable 8 can explore different areas of study like broadcast, public relations, marketing and sales.

“Students are able to get hands-on experience and experience a fun and professional environment,” Wilcock said.

Wilcock joined Cable 8 during the winter of her freshman year at WSU. She joined because she heard Cable 8 was an important part of why the communication program was successful.

“I was really excited to get to work in a professional environment and write for such a well-known group,” Wilcock said.

Students do not have to be part of the communication major to be involved in Cable 8. It is open to all majors and experience levels. Cable 8 currently offers several different shows, each requiring a producer and director.

Wilcock said the experience has helped in her career goals.

“I have gained a great perspective on what the field is like and learned many skills that I could never have learned in a classroom,” Wilcock said.

Cable 8 is looking for more students to get involved.

“We’re looking for more crew and talent,” said Danielle Gilbertson, a senior communication major and vice president of marketing and alumni affairs. “They can get hands-on experience that they can’t gain in a classroom.”

Students interested in getting involved with Cable 8 can email info@cable8.org. Television and promotional meetings are also held the first and third Sunday of every month, in Murrow East Rooms 242 and 307 at 6 p.m.
