Daily Evergreen has too much sports coverage

I read The Daily Evergreen every day and appreciate the information shared. However, after reading Monday morning’s addition, I am reminded once again of what I perceive is a deficiency in coverage regarding academic activities and achievements by students and faculty at WSU.

For example, this weekend the WSU Music Department presented several outstanding performances by its student and faculty choirs and ensembles during its final Holiday Concert. While there were two full pages of information about Cougar athletic achievements, a new coach and a pro football game that was not about the Seahawks, there was no mention of this WSU academic achievement.

Other than in the Community Calendar section of the paper, rarely have I seen articles or even reviews regarding new publications by faculty, key note speaking activities by faculty and administrators, special lectures such as the Malcolm X lecture last week or Dissertation/Thesis acceptances by graduate students.

While the Pullman campus is a beautiful facility in which to be educated, and the sports program certainly provides quality entertainment, many students actually attend WSU because of the quality education being delivered by a distinguished faculty. Hopefully, The Daily Evergreen can develop a reporting process that highlights the impressive academic institution we are.
