Music, arts and carnival rides will be the main attractions at the 2012 Springfest this weekend.
Springfest is an annual event organized by the Student Entertainment Board (SEB).
The two-day event will feature the Adult Swim Carnival Tour from 5 to 11 p.m. on Friday night and hip-hop group 3Oh!3 at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Beasley Coliseum, said Aubrie Schlegel, senior fine arts major and student chair of the CUB Art Gallery.
She said rapper Action Bronson will headline the Adult Swim show on Friday night and rock band The Cab will perform at 4 p.m. Saturday at the carnival. The carnival will also feature a chainsaw juggler, food, rides and games, Schlegel said.
Chingy and Weekin' Warriorz, this year’s Battle of the Bands winner, will open for 3Oh!3.
Brian Logan, junior management operations major and SEB director, said the SEB tries to bring many concerts to Pullman for WSU students throughout the year, with Springfest being one of the main venues.
“We try to bring in a bunch of different types of music for people who like different genres so everyone will have something that they enjoy,” Logan said.
New to Springfest this year will be an arts festival, held in Ensminger Pavilion, said Angel Nava, arts and programs coordinator for Student Involvement.
“The purpose of the arts festival is basically to just bring more energy to the arts on campus,” Nava said.
She said the festival will mainly feature student artwork without many outside artists. One of the goals of the festival is to highlight the dynamic work being done by students on campus.
She said the event will be interactive, allowing students to create art at the festival.
“We’re creating arts events that are really engaging for students,” she said.
Students will have an opportunity to participate in light graffiti and to make their own photo strips in the stage prop photo booth. There will also be a graffiti wall set up for students to paint on, she said.
Up-and-coming indie-pop group April Smith and The Great Picture Show will perform at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Ensminger Pavilion. Nava said April Smith is known for her song “Colors” which was featured in a 2012 Super Bowl advertisement.
Schlegel said the main headliner for Springfest, 3Oh!3, was selected by the students through a survey sent out every year. The survey lists possible music groups and the SEB sends out offers to the three groups with the most votes.
For the other bands performing, the selection depends a lot on budget but student input is also taken into consideration, Schlegel said.
“People will leave comments on our Facebook page or they will send us emails saying ‘hey, you should look into this person,’” she said.
The carnival will be located between Stadium Way and Lincoln Drive on Wilson Road. The carnival and arts festival are free to WSU students. For more information, visit seb.wsu.edu.
