WSU hosted the Cougar Cup Monday and Tuesday and finished the tournament in fourth place.

The Cougars shot a final round 293 (+5), which is the third lowest round in Cougar Cup team history.

“I was excited about our play this week,” Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. "I was especially excited about the final round we posted. Five over par, 293, is an excellent score, solid round. The field this week was tough and I felt like we came out and played well.”

The Cougars finished fourth behind Washington, Stanford and only one shot behind Idaho.

Freshman Kristen Rue finished in a tie for second place at 221 (+5). Stanford's Sally Watson finished in first at 220 (+4), sinking a 40-foot putt on the final hole to win the tournament.

“She came out and really played solid,” Kamimura said. “And really put a couple of great rounds together, that two under 70 was a really solid performance … I was proud of her.”

Junior Emma Betland was the other Cougar to finish in the top 25, shooting a 227 (+11). Senior Kristen Allard and sophomore Mallory Kent tied for 28 at 233 (+17) and freshman Linsday Harmon tied for 62 at 244 (+28).

Competing as individuals for the Cougars were junior Ali Thompson shooting 234 (+18), junior Brenda Jesernig shooting 236 (+20) and junior Ellen Park (cq) shooting 237 (+21).

Coming off of a first place finish in the team’s first tournament, Kamimura said she did not have any expectations coming into this tournament.

“Golf is one of those games where you never know what’s going to happen,” Kamimura said. “I’m one of those coaches that focuses on the process and growing and improving, and I feel like our team has really improved.”

The women will be back in action Oct. 3 through 5 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., for the UW/Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.

“This team has a ton of fight in them,” Kamimura said. “Sahalee is a tough course, the PGA championship was there – it’s a championship style course. It takes a solid plan and solid execution of that plan. I just look for us to carry this momentum we have had the last couple of weeks, especially the final round today, looking forward to us carrying that over the rest of the season.”
